Okotoks receiving provincial funding for new affordable supportive living project

The province has committed over $7.4 million in provincial grants to assist in the creation of 100 new affordable supportive living units at the Okotoks Affordable Supportive Living Project.

'This capital funding will help develop more affordable supportive living accommodations, as well as expand and modernize existing facilities to meet the needs of lower income seniors and Albertans with disabilities,' said Mary Anne Jablonski, Minister of Seniors and Community Supports. 'It will also allow residents to remain in their communities close to family and friends while they continue to receive the accommodations and services they require.'

The Okotoks Affordable Supportive Living Project will benefit the local economy by generating over $15.3 million in capital construction spending. This project is part of more than $119 million in capital funding from the Alberta government to help support the development and modernization of 1,153 supportive living spaces through the Affordable Supportive Living Initiative (ASLI). The funding will also help update another 1,992 lodge units across the province through the Lodge Modernization and Improvement (LMI) program.

'This is a much needed addition for Okotoks and delivers on a need identified by the community,' said George Groeneveld, MLA for Highwood and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development. 'The new facility and modernizations will not only improve residents' quality of life, but help ensure more residents are able to remain in their communities and still receive the services and care they need.'

Budget targets of another $150 million over the next three years will be used to help build more affordable supportive living spaces and to modernize and improve lodges. Since 1999, the province has invested more than $246 million in capital funding to support the development or modernization of about 4,800 supportive living housing units.

The funding is part of the Alberta government's commitment to improve the quality, supply and client choice in the continuing care system and to meet the changing needs of Albertans.
